Ukrainian imports exceed exports by 70% in H1

Ukraine’s visible imports rose 9.2% to $33.2 billion in the first half of 2024 from $30.4 billion a year earlier, while exports edged up by 0.5% to $19.5 billion from $19.4 billion, Ukrainian media reported the State Customs Service as saying on Telegram.

Imports therefore exceeded exports by 70%, with the visible trade deficit totalling $13.7 billion in the first half.

“Taxable imports totalled $28.1 billion, which is 86% of the total amount of imported goods,” the service said.

The leading exporters of goods to Ukraine in the half were China with $6.4 billion, Poland with $3.7 billion and Germany with $2.6 billion. Ukraine’s largest export markets were Poland with $2 billion, Spain with $1.6 billion and China with $1.6 billion.

Machinery, equipment and vehicles accounted for 65% or $11.4 billion of imports in the first half, chemical industry products made up $5.9 billion and fuel and energy products accounted for $4.3 billion.

The leading exports were food products with $12.4 billion, followed by metals and metal products with $2.1 billion and mineral products with $1.8 billion.
