Ukrainian agricultural exports slip 1% in 2023-2024 season – analytics agency

Ukraine exported 5 million tonnes of agricultural products in June, 25% less than in the previous month but about the same as the 4.9 million tonnes exported in June 2023, Ukrainian media reported, citing information and analytics agency UkrAgroConsult.

The country’s overall agricultural exports in the 2023-2024 agricultural year (July-June), including grains, oilseeds and processed products, slipped 1% to 67.3 million tonnes, the agency said.

The main export commodity was corn, exports of which fell 3% to 57 million tonnes, followed by wheat, exports of which rose 6% to 9 million tonnes.

There was a significant drop in agricultural exports by land in the 2023-2024 season compared to the previous year, which was due to high logistics costs amid lower world grain prices; the availability of the less expensive sea corridor; and blocking of borders and bans on imports of Ukrainian agricultural products in a number of European countries, the agency said.

Exports by truck fell 63% to 2.06 million tonnes and exports by railway dropped 19% to 9.06 million tonnes. Vegetable oil and processed food were mainly exported by road.

Ukrainian Deputy Economy Minister and Trade Representative Taras Kachka said earlier that Ukraine exported 69.86 million tonnes of grain, oil crops and vegetable oil in the 2023-2024 agricultural year.
