Serbia and Georgia on Monday agreed to launch negotiations for the conclusion of a bilateral free trade agreement (FTA), the trade ministry in Belgrade said.
The FTA is expected to be concluded by the end of 2026, the ministry said in a social media post after Serbia’s trade minister Jagoda Lazarevic and Georgia’s minister of economy and sustainable development Mariam Kvrivishvili signed a joint statement for the conclusion of a free trade agreement.
“The agreement that we will conclude opens up the possibility of improving trade cooperation,” Lazarevic stated. Kvrivishvili emphasised that the launch of the talks will be a key milestone in the relations between the two countries.
According to data from Serbia’s chamber of commerce, Serbia in 2024 exported products worth about 10 million euro ($11.8 million) to Georgia, including cigarettes, paper and paperboard, and tyres for passenger cars, among others, while importing products worth 1.7 million euro, including lubricating oils, machines, among others.
Serbia currently has free trade agreements with China, the EU, Egypt, Turkey, the Eurasian Economic Union, Great Britain, CEFTA, and EFTA countries, according to data from the trade ministry. Earlier this month, Serbia concluded the first round of talks on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with South Korea, after signing a similar agreement with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2024.
