The International Transport Forum (ITF) held an annual online summit on May 26-28, 2021 with the participation of transport ministers from a number of countries.
The purpose of the meeting is to exchange information on the strategic importance of transport policy. The 2021 Summit was held under the slogan “Transport Innovation for Sustainable Development” and aimed at analyzing the profound structural changes that have affected transport in the context of the Covid pandemic.
Leipzig (Germany) has become the center of the current 2021 summit. They discussed issues related to new opportunities for modernizing transport systems, such as digitalization and automation, which remove obstacles to the movement of people and goods, changing their way of life and work. The meeting participants discussed ways of moving towards a more sustainable, efficient and sustainable model, as well as the importance of innovation in the transition process of ending the acute phase of the covid epidemic.
State Secretary of the Ministry of Economy Juliana Dragalin participated in the summit on behalf of Moldova. She reaffirmed the commitments of the Republic of Moldova and expressed support towards a common response to challenges such as rebuilding and building sustainable and safe transport networks, promoting and encouraging ecological transport, improving the management and financing system, etc.
In January-March 2021, enterprises of railway, road, river and air transport transported 3.1 million tons of cargo, which is 14.6% less than in the same period of the previous year. Freight transport is also dominated by road transport, transported 2.5 million tons of cargo, or 95% compared to the previous year. 522.7 thousand tons were transported by rail, or 55.7% compared to the same period last year. The figures show that the car industry managed to stay at the same level in cargo transportation, while the Moldovan railway continued to decline.
